Sensorimotor OCD Therapy Chicago
Constantly Aware of Your Breathing or Swallowing? It May Be Sensorimotor OCD.
Most people don't think about breathing.
Or swallowing.
Or blinking.
These automatic body functions simply happen in the background while we focus on living our lives.
But for some people, something changes.
Suddenly, every breath feels impossible to ignore.
Every swallow demands attention.
Blinking, eye contact, saliva, heartbeat, or even the sensation of thinking itself becomes impossible to tune out.
If you're searching for Sensorimotor OCD therapy in Chicago, you may be wondering if anyone else experiences this.
The answer is yes.
At Chicago Counseling Center, we work with individuals living with Sensorimotor OCD, also known as Hyperawareness OCD. Although this OCD subtype is less commonly discussed than contamination or checking OCD, it can be just as distressing.
The encouraging news is that effective treatment is available. Through specialized OCD treatment and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), many people learn to stop fighting their awareness and return to living the life they want.

What Is Sensorimotor OCD?
Sensorimotor OCD is a subtype of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in which attention becomes fixated on automatic bodily sensations or processes.
Instead of focusing on external fears, the brain becomes intensely aware of internal experiences that normally happen without conscious effort.
Common examples include:
Breathing
Swallowing
Blinking
Heartbeat
Saliva
Eye contact
Tongue position
Muscle tension
Visual awareness
The sensation of thinking
The distress usually isn't caused by the sensation itself.
It's caused by the fear that you'll never stop noticing it.
Many people describe feeling trapped inside their own bodies, wondering if life will always feel this way.
Why Does It Feel Like You Can't Stop Noticing?
One of the most frustrating aspects of Sensorimotor OCD is that the harder you try not to notice something, the more noticeable it becomes.
Imagine someone says:
"Whatever you do, don't think about blinking."
Almost immediately, your attention shifts to blinking.
Now imagine OCD adds another thought:
"What if you never stop noticing it?"
Suddenly, your attention becomes locked onto the sensation.
The brain begins monitoring it constantly.
The awareness feels permanent.
This isn't because something is wrong with your body.
It's because OCD has turned a normal bodily process into something your brain believes is important.
Common Types of Hyperawareness OCD
Although every person's experience is different, several forms of Sensorimotor OCD are especially common.
Breathing OCD
Many people become intensely aware of every inhale and exhale.
Some worry they have to consciously control their breathing.
Others fear they'll never stop noticing it.
Daily activities like reading, relaxing, exercising, or falling asleep may become difficult because attention keeps returning to breathing.
Swallowing OCD
Swallowing suddenly feels awkward or unnatural.
People may become aware of saliva, throat sensations, or every individual swallow throughout the day.
Meals, conversations, and social situations can become exhausting because attention remains focused internally.
Blinking OCD
Blinking becomes the center of attention.
Some people begin wondering whether they're blinking correctly or frequently enough.
The more they monitor blinking, the harder it becomes to ignore.
General Hyperawareness OCD
Some individuals experience obsessive awareness of heartbeat, muscle tension, eye contact, body position, or even the sensation of having thoughts.
While the focus may shift over time, the OCD cycle remains remarkably similar.
A Common Example
Imagine you're reading your favorite book.
Without warning, you notice your breathing.
At first, it's simply an observation.
Then another thought appears:
"What if I can't stop noticing this?"
Soon you're wondering whether you're breathing correctly.
You begin checking.
Should you breathe more deeply?
Should you distract yourself?
Should you test whether the sensation is still there?
Within minutes, you've stopped reading altogether.
Nothing changed about your breathing.
What changed was OCD's relationship with it.
Why Trying to Stop Noticing Makes It Worse
One of the biggest traps in Sensorimotor OCD is trying to eliminate awareness.
People often:
Search online for reassurance.
Ask others whether they've experienced the same thing.
Constantly check whether symptoms are improving.
Monitor their breathing.
Analyze swallowing.
Mentally test themselves.
Try to force attention elsewhere.
All of these responses make sense.
Unfortunately, they also teach the brain that the sensation is dangerous.
As a result, the brain continues monitoring it.
This creates a cycle that feels impossible to escape.
How ERP Therapy in Chicago Helps
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is considered the gold-standard treatment for OCD, including Sensorimotor OCD.
Many people assume treatment involves learning how to stop noticing bodily sensations.
It doesn't.
Instead, ERP teaches individuals to stop treating those sensations as emergencies.
Treatment is collaborative and individualized.
Depending on your symptoms, ERP may include learning how to:
Allow yourself to notice your breathing without trying to control it.
Experience swallowing sensations without checking them.
Continue reading, working, or relaxing even while awareness is present.
Reduce reassurance-seeking.
Decrease mental checking.
Allow uncertainty about whether awareness will disappear.
Over time, the brain learns that these sensations are not dangerous.
As urgency decreases, attention naturally becomes more flexible.
What Recovery Actually Looks Like
Many people begin treatment believing success means never noticing their breathing again.
Recovery usually looks different.
Instead of asking:
"How do I make this stop?"
People begin asking:
"Can I allow this sensation to exist without fighting it?"
That shift is often where meaningful progress begins.
As the struggle decreases, awareness frequently fades into the background on its own.
Not because it was forced away.
Because it was no longer treated as a threat.
